Crosslinking
Dr Mohamed Elnahrawy offers Corneal Cross-Linking at our Werribee Clinic.
Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) is a treatment to prevent Keratoconus getting worse. It is successful in more than 9 out of 10 people. Cross-Linking does not cure Keratoconus but helps to halt disease progression and prevent further deterioration of vision. After treatment, the patients still need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
What is Cross-linking?
Keratoconus gets worse because the cornea weakens and thins causing it to bulge into a cone. Cross-Linking uses ultraviolet light and vitamin B2 (riboflavin) drops to stiffen the Cornea. Used together, they cause fibres within the Cornea to cross-link – or bond more tightly. This treatment mimics the normal age-related stiffening of the cornea, which is known as natural crosslinking.
